‘Settled.’ is a project designed to support international students at Media Design School in navigating the New Zealand healthcare system. As international students ourselves, we noticed that accessing and understanding healthcare information was often confusing and overwhelming. This lack of clarity led many students to avoid seeking medical attention altogether, choosing instead to go out of their way to prevent illness to avoid the stress of engaging with the healthcare system.
The name ‘Settled.’ originated from the question ‘have you settled?’ when we were talking to other international students.

[overview]

challenge
The brief challenged us to address a key issue within the primary healthcare sector by exploring ways to improve accessibility. Our focus was on supporting international students at Media Design School in navigating New Zealand’s healthcare system more confidently and effectively.
approach
Our initial approach focused on identifying the key reasons why international students find the healthcare system confusing, as well as exploring strategies to make healthcare information more engaging and accessible. We also examined their attitudes toward healthcare and the extent to which they prioritise it in their daily lives. Thorough research is also needed about New Zealand’s healthcare system itself in order to distribute accurate information.

We as a group collectively agreed on the design of the logo, but I helped the graphic designer (Loretta Steyn) by producing it. I also ideated the mascot concept for Settled. (They were illustrated by Gayle Limbu)

We were planning on distributing the pamphlets and collaterals during Media Design School's Orientation Day. This is because the International Students are checked in seperately, by utilising this time we would be able to ensure that every International Students receive them.

[research]

International students in Media Design School face challenges in finding information about healthcare in New Zealand. Although they are provided with a student guide, many do not read it or know of it, resulting in missed crucial information. Consequently, they have limited understanding of the New Zealand healthcare system, particularly regarding General Practice Clinic registrations. How can we help Media Design School to improve the provision of healthcare information and register the international students into a General Practice Clinic?
Unlike New Zealand citizens, international students cannot access the free publicly funded healthcare system without health insurance. International students were also mandated to have health insurance for the duration of their studies. Furthermore, International student are ineligible to ‘enorl’ with a General Practice Clinic but they can register (for appointments, etc). This proves to be a problem as Private Universities, like Media Design School, has limited healthcare support for International Students. In comparison to Public Universities, where they provide a General Practice Clinic for International Students on campus.
Given that the international students in private institutes are typically 18 or older and are responsible for their own healthcare, what are the barriers they might face when trying to access healthcare?
key insights:
- They do not actively consider healthcare, as it is not a significant priority for them.
- Culturally, they rely on home remedies instead of formal health care.
- The only healthcare information upon arrival is mainly from the health insurance email.

The students are aware that MDS provides a ‘Your Student Guide to Auckland’...
1 out of 5 people read the entire guide.
